  • How Old is Chinese Medicine?

Chinese medicine goes back over 3,000 years.

How many styles of acupuncture are there?

There are several styles of acupuncture which are classified into different micro-systems of the body such as the hand, foot, scalp, and ear. Each one of these systems represents certain other areas of the body. Certain micro-systems are more effective than others at treating specific sorts of problems. In some cases, combinations of systems are best suited for a particular condition. At Acurehab we have expertise and knowledge of the most effective and useful acupuncture techniques available. In fact we have organized them into an acurehab methodology that we use as guidelines to deliver our extraordinary results.

    Does Acupuncture Really Work?

Yes. In the past 2,000 years, more people have been successfully treated with acupuncture than with all other health modalities combined. Today acupuncture is practiced widely in Asia, the Soviet Union, and in Europe. It is now being used more and more in America by patients and physicians. Acupuncture treatments can be given at the same time other techniques are being used, such as conventional Western medicine, osteopathic or chiropractic adjustments, and homeopathic ornaturopathic prescriptions. It is important that your physician-acupuncturist know everything that you are doing, so he or she can help you get the most benefit from all your treatments.

    How Does Acupuncture Work?

The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others. The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams, and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians. The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.

What are the Needles like? Does it hurt?

People experience acupuncture needling differently. Most patients feel nothing as needles are inserted; some people feel a mild twitching or dull ache as the needles are manipulated. Once the needles are in place, there is no pain felt. Acupuncture needles are very thin and solid and are made from stainless steel. The point is smooth (not hollow with cuttingedges like a hypodermic needle) and insertion through the skin is not painful like injections or blood sampling. The risk of bruising and skin irritation is less than when using a hollow needle.

    What about needle-less acupuncture?

In some cases, when people are excessively nervous about acupuncture, we will perform needle free acupuncture. This is done with low level lasers that are specifically designed for use on acupuncture points. This is a painless procedure which is an effective alternative to needle acupuncture.

Do I have to believe in acupuncture for it to work?

No. Acupuncture is used successfully on cats, dogs, horses and other animals. These animal patients do not understand or believein the process that helps them get better. A positive attitude toward wellness may reinforce the effects of the treatment received, just as a negative attitude may hinder the effects of acupuncture or any other treatment. A neutral attitude ("I don't know if I really believe in this.") will not block the treatment results..

How many treatments are nessecarry to obtain results?

Not long. Because we use the most effective methods available, such as Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture, most patients feel improvement after the first treatment with these positive responses usually lasting for 3 to 4 days

How often should I be treated?

The frequency of treatment is determined by the acuteness and severity of the condition. Some acute conditions such as post stroke disorders should be treated as much as 3 times per week. Most other chronic conditions are well suited to 2 or less treatments per week.

    Possible Reactions

People usually feel physically looser, emotionally relaxed, or maybe a little “spacey” after a treatment. It is common to feel a little tired, so plan your evening accordingly. Often pain relief is felt right away and continues to improve. Sometimes you may feel achier or flared (in cases of rheumatoid and nerve pain) for the rest of the day, followed by a period of relief. It is optimal to be treated regularly for the recommended course, to insure optimal results. The effects of acupuncture are cumulative. Acute conditions often respond very quickly. Chronic conditions may take more time. Each condition is different. We will discuss with you our recommendations and prognosis after we have determined your degree of response to the therapy

What should I wear for the treatment?

Just wear loose fitting clothes that can be easily rolled up above your elbows and knees.
